mucked: (☂ what's been happening)

[ she doesn't begrudge him the look on his face. she'd expected it, hadn't she? it doesn't bother her -- and, indeed, she's ploughed through in the face of darker expressions.

after a moment's hesitation, peggy settles on the truth. ]

Last time we talked about it, I wasn't in a good position to take a proper interest. Newly arrived, and -- if I may be so candid -- rather failing to come to terms with a great many other revelations. Few of which had anything to do with Wonderland.

[ shield, steve rogers, a grand-niece. ]

But an associate recently reminded me that what happened, what you did, is worth a deeper dive. [ a beat. ] If you'll permit it.

[ she's here, now. she's in wonderland and she realizes that her attention can't be caught up with problems back home -- things she can't solve, or change, or affect. it's time to fix her focus on the here and the now.

it's time to go to work. ]

[ she nods -- without surprise and without resentment. in fact, she reaches for yet another biscuit. this time, she's less quick to dunk it and soak it. for now peggy only snaps it in two and taps one half against her mug's lip. ]

And there's nothing committed to memory. [ it's not a question. rather, it's a wry acknowledgement of what they both know as the likely truth -- as well as acknowledgement that she won't make him admit it. ] What a pity.

[ she'd meant what she'd implied: she's not looking to take information from him that he's not willing to give. if he wants to pretend as though there's nothing to tell, she'll allow him that fiction. this conversation isn't about getting results; this conversation is about getting a rapport. ]

now, she dunks the biscuit. ] Perhaps it's just as well.

Don't be. [ sorry. ] I'm not.

[ peggy's not yet convinced by said associate's enthusiasm for this particular well of data. what she is convinced by, however, is her own instinct to place herself as the middleman between the two.

besides, she'd warned mister hunter not to set his hopes too high. quite apart from the work itself, peggy wasn't certain fitz would even be fit for it. the look in his eye makes her think that uncertainty was well-harboured. ]

We're sharing notes, observations, theories. That's all. [ at least, that's all that peggy needs it to be right now. describing her weekly appointments with this associate as anything else would only prove too complicated. ] Your work came up in his. I mentioned our -- [ connection? tether? ] -- shared world.

[ then, almost kindly: ] And I wanted to make certain I was the one who spoke to you.

Considering I've got no point of reference, [ peggy doesn't smile, although she's tempted to, when she alludes to the 'lost' date, ] I can't say one way or another whether Mister Hunter's notes on the matter are at all accurate.

[ despite the casual veneer, the mention is anything but. let fitz lodge his complaints now or thereafter hold his peace. peggy doesn't mind a bit of lying and deceit, but she won't risk burning bridges with the shield agents (here) just to make the digging easier for herself. ]
mucked: (☂ what have you been up to?)

[personal profile] mucked 2017-11-20 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
[ peggy's not so certain she'd call the entire scope of that mishap whimsy, given some of its personal fallout for herself. but she can suss out why fitz draws the distinction. ]

Well, that rather depends on the referral. Doesn't it? [ ... ] In your opinion, does his attempt merit another look?

[ she's not interested in mere deflection -- so why not tie fitz's professional verdict to the question? ]
mucked: (☂ being right is my kink)

[ rip had suggested data might be a nice consolation prize if it turned out (as peggy suspected it would) that fitz wasn't up to a repeat engagement. but not just anyone's data and -- and peggy's got the feeling that rip mightn't be the sort of person much consoled by a consolation prize.

all the more reason to keep her finger in the pie. so to speak.

anyway, it's all moot because whoever this pines fellow is his attempt isn't the one that stirred either faith or furor. no, peggy's fix her faith on fitz -- and as certain other individuals can attest, peggy carter's faith is a force of nature. ]

I'm asking for your perspective on his 'different perspective,' Aget Fitz.

[ -- don't make her say please again, mate. she so dislikes doing so. ]
mucked: (☂ and i can't help myself)

[ -- not a beat is missed when she follows suit and, seeing him push back from the tables, takes to her feet herself. the funny thing is, peggy can't quite keep herself from smiling.

and smiling a lot. it's the kind of smile that beams. if someone didn't know better, they might almost mistake it for pride.

peggy approaches only as close as the half-way mark along the table's edge. from there, she leans in and sticks out her hand. during that last event, fitz had hugged her. all she can offer now is a firm handshake. ]

You know, I was half-worried you'd buckle without so much as a shove. [ it's a good thing, she thinks, that fitz took his quiet stand. pointed her elsewhere. parried her probes with answers that, if not good, were at least the sort that shut the conversation down. ] But I think I'm glad you didn't.

[ she waits. and regardless of whether he accepts the handshake or not, peggy says: ] I'll tell Mister Hunter there's no use barking up this tree. [ as predicted, as warned, as expected. ] But if that ever changes, I hope you'd consider coming to me...second.

[ first would have been the wrong offer to make, given how fiercely fitz spoke of simmons when they were all in tartarus -- and the lengths he went to for her birthday. no, if anyone will know first? it'll be her. ]

[ personally, peggy wouldn't go so far as to call it a test. more like the practical application of a hunch. or a hope. a well-needed reminder that this absurd cult of personality isn't sewn too deep. and that maybe, just maybe, her faith can be well-founded in at least one fraction of shield. ]

If it was, then I do believe it was a test for the both of us. [ because peggy withheld her best advantages out of respect for him, the support he's already given her, and the notion that one day he should find a home under an umbrella she supposedly opens up.

after their handshake, she knocks her knuckles once on the desk. her smile has since subsided back to a neutral expression. but there remains something bright and invested in her eyes. ]
